9. Teet
The oldest film on the list of movies that scared Netflix’s audience is Teeth, a film that feels like the spiritual predecessor to Julia Ducournau’s RAW in every way. Both are perverted coming-of-age films about young women who discover they have an inherently destructive nature, they were each critically acclaimed, and they both have some seriously hard-to-watch moments.
After Dawn (Jess Weixler) discovers she has vagina dentata (a popular folklore theme about women with teeth in their vaginas) she begins to explore her sexuality while biting off men’s penises. It’s hard to know which one of these scenes would turn audiences off the most. Early on in the film, Dawn is raped by a youth pastor before she renders him penis-less, and the whole scene is very hard to watch. Later in the movie, a young man is left bleeding in his bed while on the phone with his mother, and that’s probably the scene where audiences gave up.
